Power of Angel Investing Workshop - Due Diligence & Valuation of Early Stage Companies

The NW Energy Angels, is cooperation with other regional angel organizations, offered a full-day workshop focused on educating current angel investors and potential new investors on due diligence and valuation of early stage companies. The workshop was facilitated by nationally recognized angel investor Bill Payne and customized for the Pacific Northwest with local expert panelists. Attendees had an opportunity to access the tools and knowledge to become a more active angel investors including best practices, models, checklists and resources that increased their efficiency in angel investing.

Due Diligence Overview

Effective due diligence is one of the most critical steps in successful angel investing. The morning portion of the workshop drilled-down and took attendees through key issues that determined major risk factors and deal breakers, and provided a window on how this important investment process works. The interactive workshop focused on what must be confirmed, the cost of confirming and the risk of not knowing. Attendees learned what it takes to validate the plan and to define and contain the risk of investment.

Valuation of Early Stage Companies

The afternoon portion of the workshop educated and empowered angel investors on a variety of ways to value pre-revenue companies focusing on three valuation methodologies: the Venture Capital Method, the Bill Payne Method and the Risk Factor Summation Method. In addition, attendees explored the importance of approaches and the roles of returns and portfolio strategies to angels and to their next deal. Attendees had an opportunity to put these methods to work in an interactive case study that is a popular part of the Angel Capital Education Foundation Power of Angel Investing workshops.

The Power of Angel Investing is a series of education programs about angel investing, developed by the Kauffman Foundation with content provided by angel experts and angel group leaders from around the country.
